When you get new cabinets for your kitchen, it turns out you have quite a few choices to make. The first major choice is deciding if you want to get stock cabinets off the shelf, semi-custom cabinets with more options of styles and finishes, or completely custom cabinets with the most variety of options and specifications. Each option fits a different budget level, and provides a different level of customization as your new kitchen comes together.
Base Cabinets
Base cabinets, also called lower cabinets, typically circle the wall of your kitchen and sit beneath your countertops. They are seen in almost every kitchen and provide easy to access storage for everyday items. They are often seen as one of the best options because they serve the double purpose of countertop space and storage underneath, providing you with the most functionality per square foot. In addition to seamlessly working around your sink, dishwasher, and oven, these cabinets can also live in a kitchen island for even more storage if you have enough space in your kitchen. Custom base cabinets commonly include pullout trash sliders, lazy susans, and other convenient storage options.
Wall Cabinets
Wall cabinets, or upper cabinets of course are cabinets that are fixed to your wall. They often are hung right above the base cabinets and have many options when it comes to styles and even functionality. One of the advantages of custom wall cabinets is the ability to add pullout shelves, specific spice cabinets, as well as unique fixtures and finishes to your wall cabinets. Of course, if you kitchen is a unique size and you need the cabinets to be an exact fit, then custom wall cabinets may also be the way to go.
Tall Cabinets
Tall cabinets are a much less common, but decidedly elegant cabinet solution. They are becoming much more common in modern kitchen designs and have a minimalist look to them. These tall cabinets can take up an entire wall if desired and can provide ample storage space for all your kitchenware, and can sometimes even alleviate the need for wall cabinets. You will definitely want to consider the layout of your kitchen before going with this option and understand how it will change the use of your space. When done right, tall cabinets can provide an incredible minimalist effect and open up the space very nicely.
